Top Dressing

Everyone here calls Dr. Fielder John....all the clients, his son, everyone....so I will start referring to him as John, also.

I laid awake from 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. again.  Then ventured out in the dark to the office to get on the computer.

I cleaned the bathrooms first and then went to finish my pineapple weeding.  John was still top dressing the banana trees.  He first puts on a layer of blue stone which is ground up volcanic rock that has 36 trace elements.  It's quite expensive.  He paid $2000 for the pile he has here on the property.  After that comes a layer of compost, then a layer of mulch.  I put the blue stone around the pineapples and started on the layer of compost.  John started helping compost the pineapples, and I was glad because he is much faster at it than I am.

I met John's son, Ben, and his partner, Sarina.  They live here on the property not very far from us.  They are very nice.  I carried the scales and some bananas up to their house.   They gave me a tour of their home.  It is very different from our houses in the States.  The front wall doesn't go all the way up to the roof so the house is completely open to the outside air.

Ben and John harvested some bananas today.  These bunches are huge and very heavy and they cut down the banana limbs and leaves.  I was surprised at how heavy they are.  It took both of them to carry the bananas up to the house.  Priscilla and I carried one of the smaller bunches and my heart rate was going by the time we got it to the house.

For lunch we had papaya, avocado, banana, mandarin, passion fruit and freshly grated coconut.

Got to sunbathe after lunch and practiced the flute.  Then we had the consultations starting at 2:00.  In Priscilla's consultation, she commented to John about he does such a good job of setting boundaries for himself.  She said she would like to be able to do that, but that she can't always  Sometimes she does what other people are doing.  John says he does it because he realizes that if he doesn't do what he thinks is right it only hurts him.  It doesn't hurt the other people.

What I am learning here are the fundamentals of a healthy, natural life.  But just like in sports and writing, once you know the fundamentals you can experiment and break the rules a bit to add color, spontaneity, creativity, and originality.  But when something isn't working, you have to go back to the fundamentals.  So it's crucial to be well-grounded in the fundamentals.

I typed up Deborah's, Priscilla's, and Jim's stories yesterday and emailed them to John so he can put them on his blog.  I also got my Nature Cure History lesson about Dr. Kirstine Nolfi, MD sent to him.  I liked learning about her.  She lost her medical license after she stopped using drugs to treat her patients.

Supper was the same:   lettuce, tomato, cucumber, avocado, Green Lava, pecans, and dates.  And I'm gaining weight.  Go figure.

After supper, Priscilla and I watched You Tube videos and checked our Facebooks until 7:45.

  2. I cannot imagine that you are gaining weight. Are you eating more than usual? Surely you are getting more exercise. I'm confused. What does John say?

  3. Janis, muscle weighs more than fat....maybe all the mulching and banana toting are turning you into a mass of muscle :-) Ben's house sounds like something I would love!

  4. I wish I had a picture of me carrying the bananas, too, but I was carrying my camera in one hand and the bananas in the other. haha Charlotte, I hope I am building muscle, but I want to lose weight!

Happy in the Garden

Yesterday I worked in the garden instead of walking around the neighborhood.  It is a different feeling. It's true that I only got in about 6500 steps by the end of the day instead of over 10,000, but it was a different feeling.  Travis planted some tomatoes and peppers, I cleaned the lower deck and pulled some weeds.  Lucy dug in the dirt and felt so happy.  I felt the same way. Working in the garden makes you feel happy and productive. I was puzzled by a plant growing in the herb garden as a weed.  I started pulling them out but decided to check if they are edible.  Edible weeds, such as dandelion,  can be used in our smoothies.  I put a picture on Facebook to ask for help identifying the weed, and the consensus is that it is plantain.  Some say edible and some say not, but I am inclined to think that it is edible.  My brother, Max, lives up in the mountains, and his neighbor says it is edible and the smallest leaves are best with...

The Lou Corona Story

Yesterday, we went to Magic Springs with our daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren.  The landscaping there is beautiful this year.  This one little flower didn't let a little concrete stop it.     Lunch today was three bananas which I ate about 1:30.  I'm letting my body rest a little bit after eating too much food the last couple of days.  I did domestic chores today.  But Travis made a trip to the City Compost Facility for another load of compost.  We'll use it on the trees we still have left to plant. We have a volunteer tomato plant coming up in one of the garden beds.  It's doing pretty well, too.  I have it on my to do list to buy some more tomato cages. The arugula I planted is up. The kale Travis planted is up. The new plum tree is planted. Here is a volunteer Poke Salat that came with the blueberry plant.  Travis planted some more blueberries in the blueberry row that lines our driveway. The...

Alko Shredder

It was chilly this morning, but I got out and worked a bit in the garden bed that had the strawberries moved out yesterday.  I fed it with the mineral supplement and fertilizer.  I started putting on compost, but ran out of time before I finished.  We are going to plant some kale in this bed. Bed #3 weeded, minerals added, fertilized, and partly composted. Travis and I went to an estate sale today.  First thing we saw was a garden shredder.  We bought it for $60.00 and brought it home.  There are lots of leaves in my yard that could be shredded. Our new used Alko shredder...made in Germany.    For dinner tonight I made a soup.  The inspiration came from Dara Dubinet on her You-tube video, but mine was different because I used what we had. My vegetable soup recipe:  Juice a beet, 6 carrots, 3 broccoli stalks, and a sweet potato.  Then heat a pot of water on the stove, but do not boil.  In the Vita-Mix, put 3 med...
